(September 22, 2011) Sony Classical has announced the signing of an exclusive recording contract with Plácido Domingo. The new contract takes Mr. Domingo full circle, bringing him back to the company where he began his recording career in the late 1960s.
Plácido Domingo’s discography is legendary. He has earned 12 Grammy Awards (including 3 Latin Grammys), has made over 100 recordings of complete operas, aria and duet collections and crossover projects. He has also made over 50 video recordings.
In addition to being one of the greatest singing actors in the history of opera, he’s also a conductor and opera administrator (he’s the general director of the Los Angeles Opera and has led the Washington National Opera for 15 years). His breadth of repertoire is remarkable and ranges from opera (in both tenor and baritone roles) and zarzuela, to Broadway musicals and contemporary ballads.
A noted humanitarian and teacher, Mr. Domingo is feted for his charitable work, giving numerous benefit concerts and performances for worthy causes. He is the founder of the international vocal competition, Operalia, recognized as the world’s most important platform for the discovery of new singers. Mr. Domingo also mentored a group of young singers on the HBO educational series Masterclass.
Mr. Domingo spoke of his new contract, “I am thrilled to be establishing an exclusive recording relationship with Sony Music. Sony and its predecessors (Columbia, CBS, RCA/BMG) have played such an important part in much of my career, yet I have not had an exclusive contract with any company in nearly forty years. Finding a permanent home for my future recordings appeals to me very much, and this steady relationship will enable Sony Classical and myself to create a variety of new, innovative, and fascinating musical projects, many of them in repertoire that I have never recorded before. In this way, we are moving forward with hope and trust in the future of the music industry."
