Austrian composer Franz Schubert (1797-1828) embodied the popular conception of the Romantic artist, single-mindedly devoted to his art, laboring in poverty and relative obscurity, whose genius was acknowledged only after his early death. Schubert's music is notable for its emotional depth, memorable melodies, and his profound sensitivity to the texts he set. He was exceptionally prolific during his short life, writing hundreds of songs, as well as opera, chamber music, liturgical music, works for piano, and nine symphonies.
