Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi (1813-1901) was one of the leading opera composers of all time. His works are notable for their lyricism and melodic invention, the effectiveness of his vocal writing, his ability to express profound empathy for his characters, and his sure sense of matching music to dramatic situations. A prolific creator, he wrote 28 operas, as well as a Requiem, one of the monuments of late Romantic religious music.
