French composer Maurice Ravel (1875-1937), along with Claude Debussy, was a prime exemplar of Impressionism, one of the most significant and influential musical movements of the 20th century. A meticulous craftsman and unsurpassed orchestrator, Ravel created music notable for its luminous and evocative use of tone color and for the clarity and elegance of its form. His best-known works include the ballet Daphnis et Chloé, the orchestral piece La Valse, the piano pieces Jeux d'eaux and Gaspard de la nuit, and the String Quartet.
