Valery Gergiev (born 1953 in Moscow), one of the most exciting, versatile, and widely respected conductors, particularly of opera and ballet, to emerge in the late 20th century, made his debut at the Kirov Opera in 1978 leading Prokofiev's War and Peace. He has gone on to become a champion of Russian opera, from Glinka and Mussorgsky to Shostakovich, Prokofiev, and Shchedrin, performing and recording many works that had previously been little known in the West.
