Austrian composer, pianist, and violinist Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (b. Salzburg, 27 January 1756; d. Vienna, 5 December 1791) was, in the opinion of most of those whose opinions merit respect, the greatest genius in the history of music. His mature compositions are beautiful of line, rich in harmony and contrapuntal texture, and intellectually engaging, and remain the epitome of Classical-era clarity. Although his primary interest was opera-six out of his eighteen operas have entered the standard repertory-he wrote in every conceivable genre, including symphonies, sonatas, concertos, chamber music, Masses and other sacred music, concert arias and songs, dances, divertimentos, and serenades.
